CISCO CES 2010 Press Confrence
This is a short summary post as there was not much here to see.
Cisco CEO John … talked about cisco’s move into the consumer market and how they believed that the consumer market was the next target for Cisco.
They talked about the Flip and the new MinoHD and how popular its becoming. But we’ve already seen the flip and it’s not something new and still has its downsides. Hey, what can you expect for a $100 camera.
The focus of the show was the home video confrencing kit that cisco plans to bring to market. They said field trials will begin spring 2010 so we can expect a lauch by the end of 2010. Again, this is not a new product but rather cisco’s existing stronghold in video confrencing brought over to the consumer market. They slapped a slick UI on it and called it a done deal.
I poked around the PR people to get an accurate answer as far as bandwidth requirements. The only reply I got was that it requires 1.5 mbps symmetrical (up/down). How this possibly makes sense is beyond me as household dynamic broadband is never symmetrical and upload speeds often cap out at 756 kbps, while download speeds get into the 20 MBps.
I also posed the question of what if you actually do have 1.5 MBps up on a home broadband service, what about the other factors in play? The PR rep indicated that that is why cisco is doing the field trials. I think this is another product they are jumping into head first without thinking. They don’t seem to be taking into consideration other network factors that happen on a shared network.
Anyhow, this is becoming more of an opinion piece, but the point is this is looking more like vaporware that will never happen.

How to Run Google Chrome OS from a Thumb Drive [Chrome Os]
Uncategorized November 27th, 2009 by Shai Perednik
Last week we pointed you toward a virtual machine build of Chrome OS for anyone eager to play around with (the still incomplete) Chrome OS, but if you’d rather try running it from a thumb drive, weblog MakeUseOf has you covered.
Tech blogger Jorge Sierra details how to install Chrome OS on a bootable thumb drive so you can run it like any other live OS—like a Linux Live CD, for example. Keep in mind, however, that the build is still very young (and technically it's still Chromium OS), and even if you follow all of the directions perfectly, you may still run into some problems. For example:
Chromium OS may or may not work on your computer hardware. I did successfully run it on two home-built frankenstein computers (with ASUS motherboards), but it did not successfully recognize the network adapter on my Dell laptop. All of this work may be for nothing, if it ends up that Chromium OS does not like your network adapter.
Still, it’s a fun little afternoon project, especially if you’re eager to try Chrome OS. If you’ve played with a build since last week’s preview, let’s hear how it worked out for you in the comments.
Wordoid helps you make nonsense names with good domains

This is an interesting site. But the names it came up with are in no way good names. I used ‘shai’ as the seed and got mostly nonsense.

“Wordoids”, which are words that are made-up, but sound right. They follow the rules of phonetics, and if done properly, roll off the tongue. The need to have an online presence has increased the need for unique product and company names and has led to these wordoids. Yet, even with a made-up name, it’s important for the name to convey something about what the product or business actually is. Now you can do it very quickly using a website called, appropriately enough, Wordoid.
For example, I gave Wordoid the shortened acronym we use for Download Squad when talking on our internal mailing list, which is DLS. The first option Wordoid presented is dlsident, and it informs me that the related domain dlsident.com is available. While it doesn’t look like much, if you spell out the first three letters as we do when using the acronym, this name actually rolls off the tongue quite nicely. It’s like a subversive version of the name. Other options it came up with are dlsider, dlsidad, dlsidends, and dlsidanila. Certainly, they’re not all winners, but I bet they’re better than you expected.
You can tell Wordoid where to place your seed word – at the beginning, end, or anywhere including in the middle of the text string it returns. This gives you a ton of flexibility to guide your wordoid’s creation to include useful information, but still come up with something unique, easy to say, and with an available domain name.
