Talk about embarrassing. Steve Ballmer guest hosted on NBC’s Today Show yesterday to talk about the Windows 7 launch. Sadly for Steverino, Matt Lauer talked a lot about and the iPhone. Even worse, sharp eyes noticed an NBC-produced graphic in the background with a Windows 7 logo appearing on the screen of what clearly is a laptop.

You can watch the here. That’s probably not the kind of quality control would have liked.

Thanks to Bill for sending this in (no, not Bill Gates)

Some of you may have noticed that some of your screensavers don’t work after upgrading to Snow . If you’re running a 64-bit instance of the operating system, you won’t be able to use most of your old third-party screensavers because they’re probably not compatible. Many of our favorite screensavers weren’t working… so instead of waiting for the developers to release them in 64-bit, we decided to see what else was out there.

iSight Screensavers from Majic Jungle (the creators of FluidTunes) isn’t new, but it’s something we’ve never covered here on TUAW. It was one that showed up first in our search and ended up killing our productivity for the rest of the day. And the next day. In fact, we’ve not really recovered productivity since we clicked the “test” button in System Preferences.

Majic Jungle has made a killer screensaver that allows you to interact with different effects and filters using the iSight camera, or any webcam attached to your . I won’t get into the countless scenarios we created (we’re pretty easily entertained), but here’s a list of interactions from the creators’ site to help explain what it does:

  • Fluid – Play with a beautiful fluid dynamics simulation
  • Particles – Create magical looking brightly colored particles wherever you move
  • Champagne – Immerse yourself in a champagne world and watch as bubbles appear all over you
  • Fire – Set yourself or your desktop on fire – in a painless kind of !
  • Water – Ripples appear wherever you move
  • Flipping Grid – Can you get all of the squares to flip over together?
  • Core Image – Over 30 configurable effects using powerful Core Image filters

iSight Screensavers is Universal Binary and Shareware. If you’d like to remove the watermarks, you can purchase a license for $4.99 — pretty cheap considering my wife and I are more entertained by this than by a $25 night at the movies.

Intro: Off the Clock is something we’ve kidded about in our newsroom for a while. The plan: write up some apps that aren’t quite made for the 9-to-5(ET) RSS feed. Nothing serious, just harmless, grown-up, after hours stuff.

It’s pretty rare that you can tell a software developer is totally up front about what truly motivated him or her to develop an application. In the case of Pr0nSpider, however, it’s painfully clear to anyone who’s been in his situation that he’s being straight up with us.

Any technician I’ve ever met is all too familiar with the “thems not my pr0ns” speech. Born of the frustration caused by yet another “I dunno how my PC got so screwed up, dog” phone call, Pr0nSpider aims to keep your clueless-but-horny pals from getting into trouble. Well, at least from getting their Windows PC in trouble.
Here’s how the magic happens. Fire up Pr0nSpider and select some categories (like the Jeopardy-esque Potpurri). Press go, and it springs into action, hoovering the appropriate inappropriate images from a handful of well-known sites. They’re automatically dumped into Program files\Pr0nSpider\Output (or Program files x86\… on 64-bit Windows).

You’ve met microblogging before. Twitter’s the most famous example, with its 140-character maximum. Well, get ready to meet macroblogging. A new service called Woofer boasts a massive 1400-character minimum. Yeah, you read that right: Woofer won’t take your posts unless they’re more than 10 times as long as a tweet.

This definitely raises some questions. For example: is this a joke? How is macroblogging different from, you know, blogging? Yes, it’s very possibly a joke: popular “woofs” include the entire Gettysburg Address and selections from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. And it’s different from blogging because standards are lower. In fact, a woof has the same low standards as a tweet, but without the severe character limitation that makes tweets pithy and interesting. Fortunately, Woofer isn’t looking to be taken seriously: the about page describes it as a humorous homage to Twitter.

Woofer’s 1400-character minimum makes Twitter look puny originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

suggest – sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes it’s off the mark. For the guys at Sophos, it’s a source of mild amusement. Why?

Well, take a look at the YouTube clip they generously shared with the world. Among the top suggestions when you type “remove” in for the first word of your query? Apart from annoying pests like Antivirus 360 and Antivirus 2009 (both fake antivirus malware) you’ll also notice AVG, McAfee, and Norton.

What does it all mean? Obviously a lot of people are searching for on how to get rid of those programs. Norton and McAfee – well, those two are apps we love to hate. But AVG? Really?

Sure. It’s a not-uncommon problem with AVG that something gets bunged up with the installer and you need to remove your current version completely in order to install the new version.

Google suggest proves that a lot of people want Norton, McAffee, and AVG off their PCs originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 17:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

In 2001, the same year the Game Boy Advance was introduced, brought the iPod to us (and not to universal enthusiasm, either). When I was doing some Google searching last night on Apple model numbers, I found something quite strange.

Who knew that there were first-generation iPods still for sale on store.apple.com! This is the very first iPod model, introduced in 2001. I don’t know how they ended up there, or why they’re selling them, but they’re shipping “within 24 hours” and are available for $129.00. Remember, this is the model with the “scroll wheel,” it’s not touch sensitive, and you have to physically turn it with your thumb or finger. Note that the image Apple is using on the store is actually for a third-generation iPod, but the product description and model number are for the first-gen. Also, these iPods are refurbished, they’re not brand new.

It includes a 5GB iPod (for only, the Windows-compatible versions came later) w/rechargeable lithium battery, original scroll wheel, headphones, an Apple iPod Power Adapter, an Apple FireWire Cable (2 meters), a Manual (iPod Getting Started), CD-ROM Disc w/iTunes (version unknown, but let’s take a guess and say “old”), and a One Year Limited Warranty that by rights should have expired eight years ago.

Are you going to take the plunge? Will it look good next to your G3 iMac? If you do or don’t, feel free to leave a comment below!
